Elizabeth Atkinson
Elizabeth Atkinson grew up in Harvard, MA, a classic New England village which has influenced the settings in much of her work. A shy, short, anxious child, she went on to earn a B.A. in Anthropology from Hobart & William Smith Colleges and completed her Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) with a focus in creative writing at Dartmouth College. In addition to working as a freelance writer for 20 years, she has taught English Literature and has held positions as a children’s librarian and co-executive director of a local arts foundation. Elizabeth is certified as an ESL instructor and recently taught in Hangzhou, China. She is enormously proud of her two children, Madeleine & Nathaniel, and her husband, Erik. When she’s not traveling, she divides her time between the north shore of Massachusetts and the western mountains of Maine, along with her slightly nutty, but very soft and cuddly doodle, Obadiah.
Elizabeth's book, The Island of Beyond, was selected by the New York Public Library as one of the Best Books for Kids and Teens, 2016. It has also been named a Maine Literary Award finalist and has been chosen by the National Council of Teachers of English as a 2017 Notable Children’s Book. The Sugar Mountain Snow Ball, received a 2016 Gold Moon Beam Award. Fly Back, Agnes is on Travel + Leisure’s “10 Books Your Kids Will Love During Quarantine” list.
